Turf, speaking of the intended bride-groom's first arrival, says:—"Look, an'the wenches ha' not found un out, and do present un with a van of rosemary, and bays enough to vill a bow-pott, or trim the head of my best yore-horse; we shall all ha' bride-laces, or point, I zee." Bay, too, was also in use, as is apparent from allusions in old writers.

Herrick, in his "Hesperides", says:-

"This done, we'll draw lots, who shall buy,

And guild the baies and rosemary."
