The rosemary was first dipped in scented water; and thus in Beaumont and Fletcher's "Scornful Lady" it is inquired "Were the rosemary branches dipped?"

From Ben Jonson's old play, the "Tale of a Tub", we learn that it was usual for the bridesmaids, on the bridegroom's first appearance on the wedding-day, to present him with a bunch of rosemary, ornamented with ribbons.
