Another common notion is, that if a wife should be unfortunate enough to break her wedding-ring, she will shortly lose her husband.

In illustration of this superstition, a correspondent of "Notes and Queries" tells us that part of the year 1857 he spent in North Essex, where a dreadful murder deprived a most respectable family of the farming class of its industrious head. "Ah!" said the poor widow, when I visited her shortly after-wards, "I thought I should soon lose him, for I broke my ring the other day ; and my sister too lost her husband after breaking her ring. It is a sure sign".
