Vintage WeddingNice Vintage Hairstyle for BrideIn Yorkshire, hot water is often poured over the door-steps of the hall door as the bride and bride- groom drive away; and the belief is that before it dries up, another marriage is sure to be agreed upon.
A writer in the "Athenaeum" (November 16th, 1867) says :—"At a wedding in Holderness, the other day, at which my granddaughter assisted, a ceremony was performed there I had not observed before. As soon as the bride and bridegroom had left the house, and had the usual number of old shoes thrown after them, the young folks rushed forward, each bearing a tea-kettle of boiling water, which they poured down the front door-steps, that other marriages might soon flow, or as one said, "flow on"." This piece of folk-lore goes by the appellation of "keeping the threshold warm for another bride". More Wedding Ideas: |
