The principal customs formerly observed at wed-dings, are curiously collected in the following pas-sage, where the scornful lady declares her determination not to marry a boaster:-

"Believe me, if my wedding smock were on,

Were the gloves bought and giv'n, the licence come,

Were the rosemary branches dipp'd, and all

The Hippocras and cakes eat and drunk off,

Were these two arms incompass'd with the bands

Of bachelors, to lead me to the church,

Were my feet at the door—were "I John" said,

[Namely, "I John take thee Mary," in the Marriage Service]

If John should boast a favour done by me,

I would not wed that year."
