The month of May has at all times been considered as unlucky for marriages; a notion which dates back eighteen centuries ago, up to the time of Ovid, who alludes to the Roman objection to marriage in this month:

"Nec vidux txdis eadem, nec virginis apta

Tempora. Qux nupsit, non diutuma fuit.

Hac quoque de causa, si to proverbia tangunt,

Mense malas Maio nubere volgus ait."
