Vintage WeddingBeautiful Old Fashioned Wedding Veil for BrideIt was formerly believed that a union could never be happy if the bridal party, on their way to church, were unfortunate enough to meet one of the following animals, viz.:—a hare, a dog, a cat, a lizard, or serpent; while on the other hand, if a spider, toad, or wolf came across their path, they were sure to have prosperity and happiness.
Many precautions were consequently taken to avert any of these supposed ill-omens, especially as oftentimes implicit confidence was placed in them; and there are numerous records which tell of fainting and terror-stricken brides from their having been the victims of such foolish fears. Pliny, in his "Natural History" mentions that in his day the circos, a kind of tame hawk, was looked upon as an auspicious omen at weddings—a proof of the antiquity of this kind of superstition. Perhaps, however, now-a-days, no greater dread is occasioned among the credulous than by the appearance of the raven: "Which, seldom boding good, Croak their black auguries from some dark wood."
